OpenAI brings GPT-6 and Intelligent UI to every ChatGPT tier, including Free
On 7 October 2026 OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT with Intelligent UI, which lets answers include charts, forms, buttons and small interactive tools. Paid tiers got it first; Free and Go followed from 8 October. Work and Codex models are unchanged.
On 7 October 2026 OpenAI announced that GPT-6 is coming to everyone who uses ChatGPT, not just paying customers. The update brings a feature OpenAI calls Intelligent UI: instead of replying only in text, ChatGPT can build answers out of charts, forms, tappable buttons and small interactive tools inside the conversation.
OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than 1.2 billion weekly users. Last month the company introduced the first GPT-6 models for paid customers; this release is the broad consumer rollout.
Who gets what
According to OpenAI's announcement:
- Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise started receiving GPT-6 with Intelligent UI on 7 October, in the Chat tab. These tiers run on GPT-6 Sol.
- Free and Go tiers were scheduled to start receiving it from 8 October. These tiers run on GPT-6 Luna.
- Enterprise availability depends on workplace admin settings.
- The models powering Work and Codex are not changing in this release.
OpenAI describes both Sol and Luna in ChatGPT as tuned for everyday conversation.
What Intelligent UI actually does
OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to decide how to present an answer: side-by-side for a comparison, an interactive diagram for an explanation, or plain text when that is most useful. Examples in the announcement include:
- A recipe with a cooking timeline next to it
- Road trip stops shown on a map
- A savings calculator, a bill splitter or a simple game built on request
Under the hood, OpenAI says it built a library of native, streamable components plus a compiler that renders the interface progressively while the model is still generating, so the user does not wait for the whole response.
OpenAI also says "there's still work ahead to improve the model's design judgment," so expect uneven results early on.
Answering while it thinks
The second change is speed. Reasoning models normally finish thinking before they reply. OpenAI says GPT-6 can now interleave thinking with answering, building a response in several partial pieces.
OpenAI's own figures (internal evaluations, not independently verified):
- GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant.
- On an internal set of everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High begins answering about as fast as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High.
The company also says GPT-6 makes better decisions about when to search the web.
Safety claims
OpenAI says GPT-6 builds on safety work from its Astra model, shows stronger resistance to multi-turn jailbreak attempts in adversarial testing, and is better at saying when it lacks the information or tools to answer. It points to a system card for details. These are company claims; outside testing will matter more than launch-day descriptions.
Why it matters
For most people, this is the first time a GPT-6 model is in front of them for free. The bigger shift is the interface: if Intelligent UI works well, ChatGPT stops being just a chat window and starts behaving like an app builder for small, one-off tasks. For small businesses, that could mean quick calculators, price comparisons or planning tools without writing code. Whether it is reliable enough for real decisions is something users should check for themselves, especially for numbers.
